Hyères, France— Twenty-two-year-old Belgian Alexandra Verschueren is now €15,000 Euros ($20,000) richer, having been named the winner of this year's L'Oréal Professional Grand Prize at the 25th edition of the Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography. The Royal Academy graduate won the award for her Medium line, which explores the creative possibilities for paper.

Inspired by German artist Thomas Demand’s photographs of lifelike paper-and-cardboard installations, her garments have the appearance of being made from paper and some are constructed with sharp, origami-like cuts. To create the unusual pieces, Verschueren used starched wool, cotton-blends, Tyvek, and in one instance, actual paper. Her patterns also resemble paper, featuring ballpoint-pen lines and graph paper grids.

Each year, Hyères, which is located in the south of France, holds the festival for up-and-coming designers and photographers. The jury this year included such major names as Dries Van Noten and Maria Cornejo. The late punk-rock impresario Malcolm McLaren had also been scheduled to participate.

The festival has a reputation for spotting avant garde talent early on. One year dynamic conceptualists, Viktor and Rolf, were picked as winners, and who have since gone on to collaborate with major international firms like H&M and Samsonite. Verschueren is already following suit: she was also the recipient of a footwear partnership planned with Spanish shoe company Camper.
